Perpetual closes out campaign, edges out Ateneo in 5

University of Perpetual System DALTA capped off its 2024 V-League Men’s Collegiate Challenge campaign with a dramatic 25-22, 15-25, 22-25, 25-16, 15-13 victory over Ateneo de Manila U at the Paco Arena on Friday.

The Altas wrapped up the tournament with a 3-4 win-loss record, finishing at fifth place behind the fourth-running National University Bulldogs (4-2). Meanwhile, the Blue Eagles ended their stint with a 1-6 card, landing seventh in the pre-season event organized by Sports Vision.

Perpetual Help displayed resilience in the deciding set, as Ateneo fought back relentlessly. Hezron Manaloto stepped up when it mattered most, unleashing successive kills to push the Altas to match point.

Jeff Marapoc then sealed the deal with a powerful kill at the middle, closing the two-hour contest in dramatic style for the Las Piñas-based squad.

“Sobrang nakakataas ng morale. Why? Kasi galing kami sa three consecutive losses. And sa tournament na 'to, nag-start kami na talo; ayaw naman namin na mag-end kami sa talo,” said assistant coach Macky Cariño, who took charge in the absence of head coach Sammy Acaylar.

Marapoc delivered a superb performance with a game-high 23 points, 22 coming from attacks. He also contributed nine excellent digs and six receptions, leading the Altas through tight sets against the determined Blue Eagles.

Kobe Tabuga contributed 14 points on 12 kills and two blocks, while Manaloto, coming off the bench, added six crucial points, including key attacks in the decider.

Ateneo, which fell short of making the semifinals after last year’s run, drew a stellar performance from Jeric Sendon, who posted 18 points on 14 attacks, three blocks, and an ace.

Teammates Kennedy Batas and Jian Salarzon also impressed, finishing with 17 and 14 points, respectively.
