University of Santo Tomas wrapped up its preliminary phase campaign with a dominant performance, defeating Ateneo, 25-22, 25-16, 25-18, in the V-League Men’s Collegiate Challenge at Paco Arena in Manila on Wednesday.
After weathering the Blue Eagles’ resistance in the opening set, the Golden Spikers flexed their offensive firepower and superior court control in the following frames to secure the straight-set victory, cementing a provisional hold on second place with a 5-2 record.
Far Eastern U topped the standings with a 6-1 slate, although De La Salle U will be looking to match that record when its faces a resurgent National U squad (4-2) for the final seedings on Friday.
Ateneo briefly threatened UST in the third set, coming within three points at 18-21, but veteran Jayrack Dela Noche fired off two consecutive kills, and rookie Jan Macam delivered a clutch service ace to close out the match in one hour and 18 minutes.
"I think we're on the right track,” said UST coach Odjie Mamon. “Unfortunately, Al-Bukharie (Sali) missed three matches because of chickenpox. So, masaya ko kasi napi-pick up na nila 'yung tinuturo naming."
UST’s middle blocker Paul Colinares had another outstanding performance at the net, recording three kill blocks as part of his 11-point output. He also made a crucial block against Ateneo’s Ken Batas in the third set, helping UST finish strong.
Dela Noche led the Golden Spikers with 17 points, 14 of which came from attacks, while Gboy De Vega contributed 10 points and seven excellent receptions.
Coach Mamon praised his seniors, noting how players like Dux Yambao, De Vega, and Popoy Hilario have significantly improved in key areas of their game.
Ateneo, which dropped to a 1-5 record, saw Batas finish with 10 points, while Jian Salarzon added nine points, seven of which came from attacks.
The Blue Eagles will try to end their campaign on a high note as they face the Perpetual Help Altas (3-3) on Friday at 3 p.m.
